Lahan, June 6, 2025 — A major financial scandal has surfaced in Lahan Municipality as it is revealed that over Rs 50 million was spent on fuel in a single fiscal year, raising serious questions about misuse of public funds. Government oversight bodies have launched an investigation, and officials are reportedly preparing a case against those responsible.
According to preliminary audit reports, fuel expenses recorded by the municipality far exceed reasonable estimates for official use. The discrepancy has triggered suspicion of large-scale corruption, including the possibility of fake fuel bills and collusion with private suppliers.
“The numbers don’t add up. Either the municipality was running an entire fleet of vehicles 24/7, or funds were siphoned off under the pretense of fuel expenses,” said a senior official at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), speaking on condition of anonymity.
Whistleblowers within the municipality allege that fuel budgets were inflated deliberately and lacked proper verification procedures. Despite repeated concerns from local civil society groups, no action had been taken until the issue gained media attention.
In response, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has asked the municipality to submit a detailed fuel expenditure report, including vehicle logs and receipts. Legal experts suggest that those found guilty could face charges ranging from abuse of authority to financial fraud.
The case has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom accuse local leaders of prioritizing personal gain over public service. “Our roads are broken, basic services are lacking, yet millions are burned—literally—in the name of fuel,” said Ramesh Yadav, a Lahan-based activist.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks.
