Kathmandu: Japan has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for comparing recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said, “It (the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear sites) ended the war. I don’t want to bring up Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but essentially it was the same.”
In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the two southern Japanese cities, killing approximately 140,000 people. Survivors continue to suffer from psychological trauma and increased cancer risks.
Shiro Suzuki, Mayor of Nagasaki, responded, “If President Trump’s remarks justify the dropping of atomic bombs, it is deeply regrettable for us.”
Survivors of the bombings held protests in Hiroshima on Thursday, demanding that Trump retract his comments. The incident has reignited painful memories of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons and raised concerns over rhetoric surrounding modern military actions.
