Home Minister Sudhan Gurung Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations and Political Pressure

Home Minister Sudhan Gurung Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations and Political Pressure

Kathmandu — In a significant political development, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has officially resigned from his post following mounting controversy and allegations of financial irregularities. The resignation comes after days of intense public scrutiny and growing political pressure.

Gurung submitted his resignation on Wednesday after meeting Prime Minister Balen Shah. According to sources, the decision was made to ensure an impartial investigation into the accusations against him and to prevent disruption to government operations.

In a statement shared on social media, Gurung acknowledged the concerns raised by citizens regarding his financial dealings, including questions about his share investments. He emphasized that he had taken these public concerns seriously and decided to step down on moral grounds.

“For me, ethics is greater than position, and public trust is the greatest power,” Gurung stated. He clarified that his resignation aims to pave the way for a fair investigation and to avoid any potential conflict of interest while holding office.

Gurung also referenced the rising wave of youth-led civic awareness, often described as the “Gen Z movement,” which has been demanding transparency, accountability, and good governance. He noted that such movements have reinforced the need for clean public life and responsible leadership.

Explaining his decision further, Gurung said he chose to resign immediately to ensure that no aspect of the investigation would be influenced by his position. He described his move as an act of moral responsibility and called on all stakeholders to embrace truth, integrity, and self-reflection.

Following his resignation, Prime Minister Shah is expected to issue an official statement shortly. Gurung’s departure is likely to trigger political shifts within the ruling coalition and the Cabinet.

Political analysts suggest that discussions have already begun regarding who will take over the Home Ministry. Gurung, who represented his party in the government, leaves behind a leadership vacuum and a challenge for his party to maintain its credibility.

In his concluding message, Gurung urged journalists, citizens, and especially the youth to commit to genuine change, stating that real transformation requires sacrifice and moral courage.

His resignation marks a critical moment in Nepal’s evolving political landscape, highlighting increasing public demand for accountability and ethical governance.
