Kathmandu, June 20 – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that “major buildings” at Iran’s Arak nuclear facility were damaged in an Israeli airstrike carried out on Thursday.
Israeli fighter jets reportedly bombed the Arak heavy water reactor, located near the city of Arak. However, the IAEA clarified that no nuclear materials were present at the site at the time of the attack.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that while there has not yet been a “major radiological incident,” the potential for a radiological accident remains a serious concern due to the strike.
The Arak facility has long been a point of international attention, particularly due to concerns that it could be used for producing weapons-grade plutonium, although Iran has repeatedly denied such intentions.
The strike marks a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, raising alarms about the safety of nuclear infrastructure in active conflict zones.
