Siraha, Nepal – The general public and vehicle drivers in Siraha district are facing severe inconvenience due to the alleged arbitrary behavior and excessive checking by the traffic police. Locals complain that within the short distance between Mirchaiya and Lahan, there are traffic checkpoints at seven different locations, making daily travel a nightmare.
According to drivers, the traffic police are collecting large amounts of money daily under the pretext of checking vehicle bluebooks and driving licenses. “Wherever we go, there is a traffic check – sometimes in Lahan, sometimes in Mirchaiya, and then again in Sukhipur. We often face 2–3 checks in a single day,” said a local tempo driver.
Passengers also reported mistreatment by the traffic police during these checks. “As soon as the vehicle stops, they snatch the keys, use abusive language, and misbehave with the drivers,” complained one passenger. Another victimized driver said, “Even after showing all necessary documents, they make unnecessary excuses to demand money. If we refuse, they threaten to impound our vehicle.”
Local business owners have expressed concern that such frequent and aggressive checking has severely affected transportation services and daily life. Passengers are unable to reach their destinations on time, and drivers are under constant mental stress.
Both the general public and transport entrepreneurs have urged the concerned authorities to address the issue urgently and to put an end to the oppressive conduct of the traffic police in Siraha.
