The National Unity Campaign, Nepal has strongly condemned the arrest of its senior leaders Manish Hindu (Purbe) and Jitendra Das by police in Dhanusha district, labeling the move as an “assault on democratic values and fundamental rights.”
In a press release issued today, the organization stated, “Our leaders were engaged in peaceful, nationalist activities, raising voices in the interest of the nation. Their arbitrary detention by police without any clear reason is completely undemocratic and a gross violation of human rights.”
The campaign expressed serious concern that this incident indicates a deliberate attempt by the state to suppress freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly, both of which are enshrined in Nepal’s Constitution.
Demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leaders, the National Unity Campaign has issued a 24-hour ultimatum, warning of a nationwide protest movement if the demand is not met.
The statement further asserted that the campaign has long been vocal against growing foreign interference, religious extremism, and social instability in the country. The arrest of its frontline nationalist figures at such a critical time, it claimed, reflects a calculated act of suppression and authoritarianism aimed at weakening the movement.

“This is not merely an attack on our organization, but on the voice of every patriotic Nepali,” the statement read, adding that such actions could further destabilize the nation.
The organization has called on patriotic citizens, human rights groups, media, civil society leaders, and elected representatives to unite and stand in solidarity against what it termed a grave injustice. The campaign has urged all democratic forces to rise in protest to safeguard national interests and democratic norms.
Warning the government of serious consequences if the suppression continues, the National Unity Campaign questioned whether silencing citizen voices is the government’s new formula for peace. The group concluded by labeling the arrest a mockery of justice and democracy, demanding broad public condemnation and immediate corrective action.
