Kathmandu: The Immigration Department has detained a man who attempted to obtain another person’s personal details by posing as a section officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs and presenting a fake government employee identity card.
According to department director and spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal, the suspect has been handed over to the District Police Range, Bhrikutimandap (Bhadra Kali area) for further investigation. The arrested individual has been identified as Krish Jisi of Tanahun district.
Dhakal said the suspect arrived at the Immigration Department wearing a civil service uniform and introduced himself as a genuine section officer. During the introduction, he claimed to be a “Batch-37” section officer and said he had been working at the Employee Administration Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the past four months.
Investigations suggest that for the past seven months, he had been using fake identity cards of a Home Ministry officer to build contacts with a reputed hotel in Kathmandu. The case surfaced after a woman allegedly defrauded the hotel and went into hiding. The hotel’s bouncers reportedly sought help from the fake officer to recover money from the woman.
The suspect brought one of the hotel’s bouncers to the Immigration Department, promising to blacklist the woman and restrict her foreign travel as leverage. After arriving at the department, he requested copies of the woman’s passport and citizenship documents by mentioning her name and also asked officials to place her on the immigration blacklist.
Further checks revealed that the suspect had previously obtained a fake identity card identifying him as a section officer of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation as well. Officials became suspicious after noticing irregularities in the employee code mentioned on his identity card when he contacted the Immigration Department’s intelligence and administration sections.
Spokesperson Dhakal said the hotel bouncer who accompanied the suspect was released after routine questioning, while further legal action is being taken against the fake officer.
