Kathmandu, June 20 – Due to the “deteriorating security situation” in Iran, Australia has temporarily suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated, “Our ability to provide consular services under the current circumstances is extremely limited. The airspace is completely closed.”
Australia has instructed all its officials and their families to leave Iran. Minister Wong also confirmed that consular staff have been deployed to neighboring Azerbaijan to assist.
She added, “The Australian ambassador will remain in Tehran.” At least 1,500 Australian citizens and their families in Iran have sought help to leave the country.
