Kathmandu: Senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balen Shah, has been at the center of a recent political controversy following his public address in Janakpur, after CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet attempted to misinterpret a Maithili word used in the speech and later issued an apology.
While addressing the public in Janakpur, Shah referred to himself as “Madheshka chhaura” (son of Madhesh). In the Maithili language, the word “chhaura” translates into Nepali as “chhoro” or “keto” (son or boy). However, Basnet interpreted the word as “chhaura” in a derogatory sense and questioned journalists, asking what kind of child is referred to as “chhaura.”
Basnet’s remarks sparked strong criticism, particularly from Maithili-speaking communities and political circles, prompting him to issue a public apology.
In a statement posted on social media, Basnet said that his comments regarding Shah’s use of the phrase “I am a son of Madhesh” were misrepresented with ill intent by some individuals. He emphasized that he has always respected Madhesh, the Maithili language, culture, and identity. Basnet further requested that his words not be misinterpreted and urged the public not to be misled by what he described as misleading propaganda.
He concluded his statement by apologizing, saying that if anyone was hurt unintentionally during the course of the discussion, he sincerely sought forgiveness.
