Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has decided to extend the tenure of the probe commission formed to investigate the physical and human losses caused during the protests held on Bhadau 23 and 24 by an additional 20 days.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal informed that the decision was taken during a meeting held today at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar.
The three-member commission was formed by a Cabinet decision on Ashoj 5 under the chairmanship of former justice Gauri Bahadur Karki. The commission includes former Nepal Police Additional Inspector General (AIG) Bigyan Raj Sharma and legal expert Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari as members.
Although the commission was initially given three months to submit its report, the Home Ministry proposed a second extension after the commission failed to complete the report within the stipulated time. The previously extended deadline was set to expire today.
The Cabinet meeting also decided to accept a grant assistance of two million US dollars from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for preparatory work related to the improvement project of the Butwal–Pokhara section of the Siddhartha Highway. Additionally, the meeting appointed Home Minister Aryal as the official spokesperson of the Government of Nepal.
Other decisions taken during the meeting will be made public through a regular press briefing, according to the minister.
