Biratnagar: The management of the Nepali Congress’s official Facebook page has finally come under the control of the party’s newly elected leadership, signaling a broader shift in organizational authority following the Special General Convention.
The change became evident after official information regarding a Central Working Committee meeting scheduled for Friday was published through the party’s verified Facebook page. This development is widely seen as an indication that control over the party’s social media platforms has also transitioned along with the change in leadership.
Following the Special General Convention, the Nepali Congress carried out various political activities, but its official Facebook page had long been accused of remaining under the influence of the Deuba faction. Critics alleged that the page mostly published activities and statements related only to the Sher Bahadur Deuba group, fueling internal dissatisfaction.
As newly elected party president Gagan Thapa prepares to formally assume office at the central party headquarters from Friday (Magh 9), Chief Secretary of the Central Office Krishna Prasad Poudel has already resigned from his post. Poudel had been appointed chief secretary in 2072 BS by then party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
On Thursday, the notice calling the Central Working Committee meeting was made public through the party’s official Facebook page by Party Secretary Prakash Sharma. According to the notice, the meeting will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm at the party’s central office, BP Smriti Bhawan, BP Nagar, Lalitpur. Office bearers, central committee members, and provincial presidents have been requested to attend the meeting as per the directive.
This will be the first formal meeting of the newly elected central committee to be held at the party office following the Special General Convention. Previously, due to internal disputes, the Nepali Congress had been making major decisions—including the distribution of tickets for House of Representatives elections—outside the party office.
Party leaders say recent developments indicate that the Nepali Congress is gradually moving toward unity after facing criticism that it was on the verge of a split. Speaking at a program held in Sundarharaicha, Morang, on Thursday, senior leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala claimed that the party is moving forward in a united manner. Having accepted the outcome of the Special General Convention, Koirala has also strongly advocated for contesting upcoming elections with collective unity.
Official Website Still Unchanged
Despite progress on social media, the party’s official website has yet to be updated. The site still lists Sher Bahadur Deuba as party president, Purna Bahadur Khadka as acting president, and Dhanraj Gurung as vice president. Two general secretary positions and one joint general secretary position are shown as vacant.
Following disciplinary actions taken on Poush 30 by the establishment faction against Gagan Thapa, Bishwo Prakash Sharma, and Fumullah Mansur, their names had been removed from the website.
Awaiting Court Verdict
After the Election Commission recognized the central committee elected by the Special General Convention, the Deuba–Shekhar faction approached the Supreme Court. However, with the Court declining to issue an interim order, party leaders are now awaiting the final verdict.
Meanwhile, the fact that the Deuba–Shekhar faction accepted House of Representatives election tickets signed by Gagan Thapa is being viewed within the party as a strong message of reconciliation and unity within the Nepali Congress.
