Kathmandu: The U.S. Department of State has announced it will soon resume appointment scheduling for international student visas, marking a significant policy shift after a prolonged pause. However, the new process will come with stricter eligibility criteria and enhanced screening measures, particularly concerning national security.
According to a press release from the department, all student visa applicants will be required to make their social media profiles public for background verification. This includes disclosing usernames and activities on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), and others.
“We use all available information during the visa screening process to identify individuals who may be ineligible for entry into the United States, especially those who could pose a threat to national security,” the State Department said.
The department added that under the new guidelines, applicants’ online presence will be scrutinized thoroughly, along with other background checks. The policy aims to ensure that only individuals who meet the U.S. government’s security standards are granted entry.
American embassies and consulates around the world are expected to soon reopen student visa appointment slots, offering new opportunities for aspiring students while maintaining a robust vetting framework.
Previously, former President Donald Trump had instructed U.S. embassies worldwide to suspend visa appointments for international students. The Trump administration had also proposed deep vetting of applicants’ digital footprints, a policy now being reactivated and expanded.
Prospective students are advised to prepare accordingly and ensure full compliance with the updated application requirements.
