Kathmandu: U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly approved military plans to strike Iran, according to CBS News, but has not yet made a final decision on whether to carry out the attack.
A senior intelligence source told CBS that Trump could halt the plan if Iran agrees to abandon its nuclear program. This report was initially published by The Wall Street Journal.
When asked on Wednesday about possible U.S. intervention in Iran, Trump stated, “I could do it, or I could choose not to.”
The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated after Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear-related sites on June 13. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel, and the hostilities have continued since.
CBS News reported on Tuesday that Trump is considering an attack on Iran’s underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow. While Israel has conducted airstrikes against Iranian nuclear and military targets in recent days, there have been no confirmed strikes on Fordow itself.
Trump is seeking a negotiated agreement for Iran to end its nuclear program. However, Iran maintains its program is strictly for peaceful purposes and firmly rejected negotiations under pressure on Wednesday, warning any attack will be met with a military response.
