Tehran: As the war between Israel and Iran intensifies, global defense analysts and diplomatic circles are increasingly concerned by a new development: a series of secretive Chinese aircraft have reportedly been flying to Iran over the past week, raising speculation of covert support for Tehran.
Flight tracking data from platforms such as Fighter Radar 24 shows that since June 14, at least five Boeing 747 cargo planes have departed from northern China, traveling westward over Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, before disappearing from radar upon nearing the Iranian border. Though their flight manifests list Luxembourg as the final destination, none of these aircraft have entered European airspace, heightening suspicion regarding their true purpose.
This comes at a critical time, as Iran faces mounting Israeli strikes on its nuclear sites. The movement of these Chinese aircraft has prompted questions about whether Beijing is stepping in to support Iran militarily or strategically.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to mediate between Israel and Iran. Although Iran has not officially requested any foreign military assistance, former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected Putin’s proposal for mediation. In a related development, Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Putin have held direct discussions, further fueling speculation about a shifting alliance in the Middle East.
According to Robert Greenway, Director of the Center for National Defense at the Heritage Foundation, “China has long relied on Iran for discounted, often-sanctioned oil to support its economic and military ambitions. Iran is a critical partner in that strategy.” He suggests that the mysterious flights could be China helping Iran relocate essential personnel, resources, or strategic materials in anticipation of an escalation.
This potential coordination comes under the broader umbrella of a 25-year strategic cooperation agreement signed between Tehran and Beijing in 2021. Mohammad Marandi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Fox News, “The more the U.S. tries to isolate Iran and China, the closer these two countries will become. This partnership also sends a direct message to Washington.”
With the Middle East already on edge, these unfolding geopolitical dynamics could significantly alter the regional balance and deepen the Israel-Iran conflict.
