Baghdad, June 14 — Iraq has urged Iran to refrain from targeting American interests within its territory, a senior Iraqi security official revealed on Saturday, as tensions continue to escalate between Iran and Israel, a key US ally.
The Iraqi government, which maintains close ties with Tehran while also being a strategic partner of the United States, is seeking to prevent its soil from becoming a battleground in the widening regional conflict. Around 2,500 US troops are currently stationed in Iraq as part of ongoing security cooperation.
“Iran was requested not to target Iraq. They have given us positive assurances,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. The source added that Tehran has so far shown understanding of Baghdad’s position.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns that the Iran-Israel conflict could spill over into neighboring countries, further destabilizing the region. Iraqi officials are reportedly working through diplomatic and security channels to ensure Iraq remains neutral and protected from retaliatory strikes.
