Kathmandu: The western low-pressure system that became active from Tuesday evening and brought rainfall to many parts of the country has now exited, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
Senior meteorologist Varun Paudel said the system has moved out since Wednesday evening. However, due to the continued influence of western winds, minor effects may still be seen in some high hilly and Himalayan regions. He added that the weather is expected to clear from Thursday, although cold conditions may persist for a few more days.
“The weather will remain generally clear unless another system enters,” Paudel said.
The system brought rainfall to several parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley, on Wednesday. However, Madhes and Koshi provinces were largely unaffected.
According to the department, Kathmandu recorded 2.2 millimeters of rainfall, while Lalitpur and Bhaktapur each received 4.8 millimeters. The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Surkhet with 43 millimeters.
Other significant rainfall measurements include 38 millimeters in Sheragaun of Rukum, 33 millimeters in Jajarkot, 35.6 millimeters in Baitadi, 33.2 millimeters in Dadeldhura, 30.2 millimeters in Bajura, 32.4 millimeters in Manang, and 31 millimeters in Dolpa.
Heavy snowfall was also reported in high hilly and Himalayan regions of western Nepal. Rainfall occurred in most western districts, including Bagmati Province, while higher elevations experienced snowfall.
The department said that tonight, partial cloud cover is expected in hilly and mountainous areas, while the rest of the country will experience mainly clear weather. Light snowfall or rainfall is possible at one or two locations in the high hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
On Thursday, fog and mist are likely in many parts of the Tarai region. Partial cloud cover will persist in high hilly and Himalayan areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, while the rest of the country will see mostly clear weather. Light snowfall or rainfall remains possible at a few locations in these regions, the department added.
